Beginning PHP and MySQL 5 was graciously sent to me by the author. With few beginning PHP/MySQL books out there this is a welcome book. All the code for the book is available from a web site and the author includes his own contact information should you wish to write him.
The book starts at the beginning level and gets you up and running with explicit instructions on how to install Apache (on Unix/Linux or Windows servers) and PHP and then gets going pretty fast if you are new to programming. It may be good to use his examples, absorb them, and try different variations to become more familiar with how things work. But this book is also very comprehensive at over 800 pages and can be used as a reference for nearly anything you would want to do with PHP and MySQL.
If there are subjects that he doesn't go to in depth here, like Apache, he will give references to other sources should you wish to explore them further.
As I paged through the book I kept thinking, I can use this, I can implement that. See the table of contents on the Amazon site to see all of the subjects he gets into.
Over a third of the book is devoted to MySQL and using it with PHP.
At over 800 pages this is a great book to keep on hand and chances are you'll be referring to it again and again.
PHP & MySQL For Dummies 3rd edition is a good book for the absolute beginner with example applications but won't be as comprehensive as Beginning PHP and MySQL 5.
PHP and MySQL Web Development
is a very complete resource for learning the two languages together. This book has been getting rave reviews.
When you are ready for more advanced PHP programming, PHP Developer's Cookbook is another highly regarded book, living up to the reputation of its sister, Perl Cookbook.
