Auslogics Disk Defrag

Auslogics Defrag Auslogics Disk Defrag is a fast and effective disk defragmentation program. It’s faster than XP’s defrag program and many feel that it just plain works better. It’s highly rated and is updated regularly.

Windows Cleanup

I would like to post my utilities for registry and disk cleanup. It’s arguable that registry cleaners are necessary but I like to use them. Removing unnecessary files will free up a little bit of disk space and keep your hard drive cleaner for when you defragment it.

No single cleanup utility seems to get everything so I like to use a few of them and thought I would mention them all in one post.

Easy Cleaner

Easy Cleaner is a multi-purpose cleanup utility program. It finds invalid registry entries, duplicate files, unnecessary files like backups, temps etc., invalid shortcuts, helps manage programs starting at Windows startup, manages the Windows Add/Remove software list, removes Internet Explorer’s temporary Internet files, history and cookies and shows you how your disk space is being used.

CCleaner CCleaner’s strength is cleaning up unnecessary files in addition to being slick and fast. It allows you to have a lot of control over what types of files it will clean up. It also has a registry cleaner and program uninstaller. The program is updated regularly.

Glary Utilities Glary Utilites includes a registry cleaner, shortcuts fixer, startup manager (for cleaning up dangerous startup entries), temporary files cleaner, tracks eraser and spyware remover.

One nice thing about this program is it scans for these things all at once instead of having to do them one at a time, called 1-Click Maintenance. You can however choose which scans you would like it to perform.

LClock - Freeware Windows Clock Replacement With Calendar

LClock is an attractive and highly customizable windows clock replacement. The default view looks like this:
LClock Default
When hovering your mouse over the clock it will show the date.

The look of the clock is highly configurable. You can choose to show AM/PM, change the size, height, font and spacing of the numbers, color and it even has a second color which can be offset. This way you can even give it an incised look as I’ve created for mine:
LClock Default
by choosing a darker color than what your taskbar has and offsetting it. The possibilities are endless.

A unique feature of this clock is it enables you to choose a custom Start button on the other end of the taskbar.

Paint.NET - Freeware Image Editor

Paint.NET

Paint.NET is a nice program if you’d like to use something relatively simple to edit your digital photos.

The interface is very appealing and the creators are improving the program with fairly regular updates.

If you are inexperienced with image editing software and just want to take the images from your camera and make them smaller and make any improvements so that you can attach them to an email message or upload them to a photo album site, here are some quick tips.

  • Use the Open icon or go to File - Open (both near the upper left-hand corner) and find the image on your camera which is usually labeled as a separate drive as in Removeable Drive [X]:.
  • If the image was shot vertically and it appears horizontal, go to Image - Rotate…
  • Since the photo will most likely be huge, go to Image - Resize and choose a width of somewhere between 600-800 pixels.
  • If the image is too light or too dark go to Adjustments - Brightness/Contrast to change to these levels.
  • When reducing an image, it will look a little softer. Go to Effects - Photo - Sharpen to bring it back to the sharpness that it should be. The default level of 2 is usually good.
  • Then you can choose File - Save As, choose JPEG under “Save as type” and after that a quality of about 70-75 should be adequate. The lower the quality the smaller the file size. Anything less that 65-70 will noticeably degrade the image quality.

Of course, the program has many other features you can explore.

Iconoid - Freeware Icon Manager

Have you ever wanted to get rid of the icons and taskbar on your desktop and just have a program open with no other clutter? Iconoid can do that and much more.

When minimized, Iconoid sits in the system tray. If you choose Hide Icons Always, your desktop icons and taskbar will be hidden. If you need the taskbar, just hover over it and it will show up. See the web site for all the other things the program can do for you.
